A Neuro-Based Approach to Healing Trauma, Anxiety, and Dissociation

Neurofeedback for trauma can help you:

Enhance Emotional Regulation

Improved Focus and Cognitive Function

Promote Calm Alertness

What Is Beta Neurofeedback?

At EMDR & Trauma Therapy Centre, we offer beta neurofeedback—an evidence-informed brain training technique that helps regulate the nervous system after trauma. Using real-time EEG (electroencephalogram) technology, beta neurofeedback guides your brain toward healthier beta wave activity, which supports improved focus, emotional regulation, and executive functioning.

This approach is particularly effective for individuals struggling with:

Why Our Beta Neurofeedback Is Unique?

Our clinic uses EEG Learn—a leading-edge, trauma-informed neurofeedback system. Unlike traditional neurofeedback, EEG Learn’s approach is tailored to:

  • Uptrain beta activity in regions impacted by trauma, especially the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC)

  • Restore balance between brain networks – especially in areas like the amygdala and mPFC, where trauma may have caused the fear response to override processing.

  • Offer state-dependent feedback, meeting your nervous system exactly where it is

  • Integrate with your therapy process—whether you’re in EMDR, parts work, somatic therapy, or relational trauma therapy

This neurofeedback doesn’t just reduce symptoms—it helps restore a sense of agency, presence, and connection to self.

The Science Behind It: Ruth Lanius’s Research

Dr. Ruth Lanius, a global leader in trauma neuroscience, has identified a consistent pattern in trauma survivors: underactivation in the medial prefrontal cortex—a key brain region involved in self-regulation and emotional integration.

Her research shows that beta neurofeedback targeting this region can:

  • Reduce PTSD symptoms

  • Decrease dissociation

  • Improve emotional containment

  • Strengthen self-awareness and cognitive control

At EMDR & Trauma Therapy Centre, we align our protocols with this cutting-edge science—offering a healing modality that supports brain-level integration alongside trauma therapy.

“Beta neurofeedback holds promise for re-establishing higher cortical control on trauma survivors” – Dr. Ruth Lanius

What You’ll Experience in a Session?

Sessions are gentle, calming, and individualized. You’ll be seated comfortably while small EEG sensors are placed on your scalp to monitor brain activity. As your brain is gently guided by subtle feedback through sound or visuals, it begins to self-correct—learning to return to a state of regulation:

1. Session Length

Before the neurofeedback session, a comprehensive one-hour assessment will be conducted to assess the protocol that will be used. The neurofeedback sessions themselves typically last between 30 to 45 minutes. During each session, clients will participate in a series of tailored brainwave training exercises aimed at promoting optimal brain function and helping to regulate neural activity for improved mental and emotional well-being.

2. Frequency

Typically, neurofeedback sessions are  2 times per week for the first six weeks and then a re-assessment will be done. This frequency helps establish a solid foundation for the brain to learn new patterns of self-regulation. As progress is made, the frequency may be adjusted based on individual needs, with some people continuing for a few weeks or longer to achieve their goals.

3. Integration

Integrating beta neurofeedback with therapy sessions offers a holistic approach to healing. Neurofeedback helps regulate brain activity, improving focus, emotional regulation, and mental clarity, while therapy addresses underlying emotional and behavioral issues. Together, they enhance the healing process, reinforce positive changes, and lead to faster, more sustainable results. This combination allows for a customized treatment plan tailored to the individual’s needs, promoting both mental and emotional well-being.

Most clients describe feeling more present, calmer, and clearer over time.
